2010 Season Preview

A few exciting mid-summer updates to share:

First, we hear that the 5K loop on Quarry Road will be cut, excavated, and bridges built before the snow flies.  Great news and many thanks to the City of Waterville and John Koons!

Second, our programs will continue in January and February of 2010 with the grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 programs and other groups will be added as we are able to add volunteer coaches and interested skiers!  We expect fees to stay the same and still include an option to lease skis for the winter!

Third, the TD Bank Bill Koch Festival will be at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester this March.  We hope to have a group of families from our club head to this fun weekend of races, relays, fun and games to wrap up the season.

Youth Festival Day

OK, so I promised results and photos and videos would be posted right away.  Things got busy for me, but here is the first of many videos that I will post.

Sunday Morning Sentinel Article: Take advantage of local cross- country ski trails and reap the rewards

BY KEITH EDWARDS

Staff Writer

It’s easy to get “lost” in the woods of central Maine — in a good way — on cross-country skis.

That’s lost as in lost in your thoughts, in the solitude of the snow and the trees and the trail. Or lost in the rhythmic motion of pushing yourself across the snow, leaving thoughts of work, finances and chores left undone behind in a white wisp of snow.

Women’s Noon Ski Group

It’s a beautiful sunny day. A great day to enjoy the trails. Unfortunately I have a dog emergency and can not get to the ski group today, Jan 21st. I hope you can get out on the Quarry Rd, North St or Colby trails. All 3 sites are groomed to perfection.

Plan on meeting on Jan 28th at the Quarry Rd parking lot for a noon time ski. All levels of skiers are welcome. Some ski instruction can be available as desired. Meet at noon, on trail by 12:10, off trail by 12:50. It would be helpful if you can email me, Caroline, at cmmathes@tdstelme.net or call 397-3477 if you are interested in this program.

Practice Details

Snow/ Cold Cancellation Policy: If Waterville Schools are cancelled due to snow then the ski program is cancelled for that day.  If temperatures are below 10 degrees at noon time then a group  email will be sent out to notify all of a cancellation.  Extending the program  into March will be considered if many cancellations occur through the season.

Hats are in and will be handed out on the first day.  There are a few extra and can be purchased for $12.  This will be done on a first come basis.  See Caroline Mathes on Tues, Wed. or Thurs at the picnic tables.

Location: North St Soccer Fields will be the gathering place for the first week.  Meet by the picnic tables next to the play ground.  Tuesday K-2 and 3-5th, Wed 3-5 and 6-8th.
A decision for Thursday’s location for 6-8th will be made by the end of Wed practice.

All Youth Practices Meet at North Street Until Further Notice

Practices for all age groups starts this week.  See you there!

Women’s Noon Ski Group

The women’s noon ski group will officially start on Wednesday, January 14th. The first week will meet at the Colby trails at the bottom of the sliding hill across from the President’s house. Park on the side of MayFlower Hill Dr. Future outings may be at the Quarry Road Recreation Site depending on conditions. Please check the website for announcements concerning location and conditions.

60 Skiers Signed Up!

We are thrilled to announce that we have 60 skiers signed up for this winter’s kids programming.

All of the coaches are excited that so many people are interested in being a part of it all and we hope everyone starts doing their “snow dances” to help the snow come soon and in great abundance this winter!

Three notes:

1) The club is in the middle of a fundraiser to be able to purchase a really nice groomer that can be pulled behind the city’s snowmobile.  We are about $2000 short of our $5400 goal thanks to some really amazing generosity from some local enthusiasts.  If you can help out, please send us a note at info@centralmaineskiclub.org or give Pat Cote a call at 873-2360.  We have older equipment that can be used for this winter, but purchasing this state of the art groomer will make the trails firm, smooth, and break up any icy conditions. The biggest benefit is that the kids will enjoy the sport more and learn at a faster curve.  Please help us if you can!

2) We are still open to registrations.  Please spread the word to friends who might be interested.  They can sign-up online using the “Sign Up” link above.   We can keep the ski lease option open only through this week, so they should act quickly.  We are also able to keep taking hat orders through this week.   The hats are red toko hats with “convertible” tassel or pom-pom.  The cost is $12 with club logo or $18 with club logo and skiers first name embroidered.

3) Ski Lease Pick-Up. As I said to most people last night, we will work to arrange a place and time where ski lease equipment can be picked up before Christmas Vacation.  This means that the kids can have fun on snow before the formal programming starts.
