Waterville, ME — It was a beautiful sunny day here on the Quarry Road trails. Particpants from Central Maine Ski Club, Sugarloaf, Gray-New Gloucester, and Coastal Nordic enjoyed fun races, good shooting, and prizes for every participants.

Many thanks to Sam and Steve from Waterville Parks and Rec for getting the trails into great shape and to the CMSC coaches for hosting the event.

Our Club’s First Olympian

The Central Maine Ski Club really picked up steam with the creation of our youth programs in the winter of 2009, but our history goes back a few more years. I moved back to central Maine in the summer of 2001 to join my wife Tracey who had been coaching at Colby for a few years. Just before that first winter, I sold my car to Jean Koons. Jean turned out to be not only a crafty negotiator, but also the mom of two boys who had done some xc skiing in New Zealand the past summer and really liked it. That March, at the NENSA J2 Championships at Sugarloaf, Jean approached me to see if I would be interested in coaching her boys and another Messalonskee student Sam Mathes. I agreed and we set up a schedule of a couple days per week with the remaining training to happen with the Mt. Blue team in Farmington.

It was a coach’s dream to suddenly get to work with three of the very best skiers in New England! Ben, Nils, and Sam absorbed all of the training I could give them; we used our time on snow efficiently, doing technique work one day and interval training the other. Today, Nils is the top ranked collegiate skier in the East, competing for Dartmouth College. Sam routinely knocks on the door of the top ten and is one of Colby’s very best. And, right now Ben is hanging out in the Olympic athlete’s village getting ready for the first race of the 2010 Olympics.

Ben, as a citizen of New Zealand, has qualified to represent his home country in these Olympics. He will be racing in Monday’s 15K freestyle race as well as other events throughout the week. I will do my best to keep you posted on how things are going for Ben, the first Central Maine Ski Club Olympian.

After watching the afternoon race a couple weeks ago, hearing about the results of Wednesday’s race, and seeing the progress in my K-2 group, I have no doubts that Ben just might be the first of many. I know for sure that he just one of many Central Maine Ski Club members who will be a lifelong skier and enjoy staying fit and healthy by sliding on skis through central Maine’s winter.

First Race Report

We had a fun informal race on Wednesday afternoon. Katie Lopes set a new course record skiing the course of out Quarry Road and back on Middle Trail in just 9:52. All enjoyed a nice lollipop at the finish.

Sign-up is still open for the 2010 Youth Progams. We are offering age-group appropriate programming for skiers of all abilities from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Club fee is just $30 with an additional $50 for a season-long lease of skis through New England Nordic Ski Association (Maine WSC skis were for the first batch and MWSC is now out of skis for the season.)

All club programs will take place on the brand-new beautifully constructed Quarry Road trails in Waterville — Quarry Road runs next to Maine General Hospital — follow it until it dead ends and the trails start there.

Rental Skis Have Arrived for CMSC Ski Program

The skis have arrived from Maine Winter Sports Center. They can be picked up at the NENSA Skis for Kids Center at 1 Post Office Square in Waterville (the old Post Office right as you enter the one-way street of downtown, above Mainely Brews.) We are right next to the Waterville Chamber of Commerce. Pat will be there from Noon to 3PM on Tuesday (12/22) and 8AM to Noon on Wednesday (12/23). Please try to make it to one of those times. If you cannot, send an email and we will try to make special arrangements.

Since sign-up and boot try-on night has passed, please be very careful in specifying your child’s shoe size; we recommend ordering a half-size larger just to be sure since exchanges are not possible. Club Programs Update

It’s September, so its time for Central Maine Ski Club to start thinking about skiing. We know it’s still warm outside, but with some luck, we hope the snow will fly this winter and so it’s time to start planning in order to have another successful ski season. Last year the coaches organized the season and with all our new members we’d like your input too! We’d like to hear from you about what worked and what you would like to see happen for this season. We know of one exciting development that was written about in the Morning Sentinel recently, the City of Waterville has cut a new trail at the Quarry Road Recreation Site. The cutting is done and the excavating and bridges are being worked on right now!

Here are some suggestions for this next season, please think about them and add more!

• How many days of programming, was last year sufficient, do you want more/less?

• Do we want to start a competitive team for the middle school age group?

• How about traveling to other ski areas?

• Ski wax clinics?

• Are you interested in becoming a coach or ski volunteer?

• Can you help with sign up…ski rentals…or snacks.

• Do you want to expand on our outfits? Last year we had hats, do you want fleeces? Or something else?

• Do you want to take on a larger fund raising effort to assist with snow making goals?

These are just some of the questions to discuss. Please start to think about some answers and form some new questions. A meeting time will be set for early October at a central location. You can also feel free to email us ideas at info@centralmaineskiclub.org any time.

Update on Trails

In Monday, August 31 Morning Sentinel:

WATERVILLE — By the time the snow flies, cross-country skiers and hikers should be able to take to the trails at Quarry Road Recreation Area off North Street.

Trees are being cleared for the 2.8-mile trail that will run parallel to Messalonskee Stream, according to City Manager Michael Roy.

“In a week or two, once the trees are gone, a contractor will come in and remove the stumps and grade the area, making it a smooth 14-foot-wide trail,” Roy said.
